Why a Coloring Book?
We created this book because we want the next generation of women to have the same rights and opportunities that men have. We did a little research, and in the US, women are underrepresented in positions of power and in the high-paying fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In fact, women hold less than 20% of the highest ranking government and executive positions, own less than 40% of all businesses and occupy less than 30% of STEM jobs.
We did a little more digging and found that one factor contributing to this is the pervasiveness of media that reinforces stereotypes about girls and women. Children’s media may seem benign, but it can have a negative impact on girls' body image, sense of self, relationships, and career aspirations by featuring characters that adhere to traditional gender roles, such as female characters that are less active, knowledgeable, and dominant than male characters, and more deferential and focused on appearance.
The impact on girls is serious and experts believe that characters like Disney princesses can magnify stereotypes in young girls. This is frustrating because girls are already struggling. According to the Dove Self-Esteem Project:
- 81% of 10-year-old girls in the U.S. are afraid of being fat
- Six out of 10 girls opt out of important activities because they’re worried about the way they look
- Girls who think they are overweight, regardless of their actual weight, have lower grades
So, why a coloring book? Media is an integral part of American culture, and it isn't going away anytime soon. We found that while media can be damaging, it also has the power to positively shape children. For example, a recent study showed that the PBS show Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood helped kids learn empathy and confidence. We also found studies that show that media designed with girls in mind can combat female stereotypes, and that coloring books specifically can positively impact girls’ interest in science. We loved the idea of approaching this very serious problem from a place of positivity. So, we decided to build on our findings and create a coloring book that would challenge stereotypes about girls and encourage families to talk about what it really means to be confident, brave, beautiful, etc.
What People Are Saying About the Book
People are raving about I Am Confident, Brave & Beautiful: A Coloring Book for Girls!
"This innovative coloring book puts the science of learning into practice with each inspirational and empowering page. Speaking as a child development specialist, and also a parent, this coloring book offers a much-needed opportunity for children to slow down and engage in imaginative play...one of the best ways for children to discover there is no limit to what they might accomplish."
--Amy Pace, Ph.D. & Professor at the University of Washington
"Hopscotch Girls is working diligently to empower young girls by using affirmations through coloring. Each page of this book has an affirmation on it accompanied by images that reinforce each statement and are just plain fun for young girls to color. If we can soothe and set the soul on the path to healing with coloring, then we most certainly can inspire our young women to believe in themselves, have a healthy body image, to always believe they can do anything they want when they set their mind to it."
