Art Challenges for Raising Strong Girls

Art Challenges for Raising Strong Girls

FEBRUARY 26TH, 2020

When it comes to raising strong girls, we believe that instilling the right mindset and perspective can be very helpful. There are many ways you can help girls get into this kind of mindset, but one of our favorites is to use creative projects to get girls thinking.

That’s why we created the I’m Me! Sketchbook—the perfect place for budding artists to explore their unique thoughts and ideas. Today we’re celebrating the release by sharing four fun drawing challenges for building inner strength. You can pair these challenges with a copy of the sketchbook for a fun afternoon together. Or, just grab some paper and pens, and give her a prompt to get her drawing.

Without further ado, here are the challenges:

Real Life Self-portrait

This challenge is meant to get girls thinking about real-life situations that scare them, and help girls visualize themselves overcoming their fears.

Challenge: Create a picture of yourself doing something that you’ve thought about doing, but are a little scared to try. This might mean trying a new sport or class, performing in front of an audience, going on an outdoor adventure, etc.

Create a Superhero

This is a fun one designed to get girls to think about what “super powers” mean to them. Creating the drawing should be a lot of fun, and the conversation with an adult that follows could be insightful. When she’s done with her drawing, try to ask a lot of questions about her superhero. What does she have in common with her hero? Would she want to be her? Why/why not? What might girls be able to learn from her hero? What might she be able to learn from her? Etc.

Challenge: Use pens, pencils or crayons to create a new superhero. Give her a super power and a name.

Portrait of a Family Member

This prompt is meant to get girls talking to their family members and reinforce the idea that they have amazing examples of strength in front of them every day. It’s also meant to help girls see that they’re not the only ones that struggle with things.

Challenge: Think of a time that a member of your family tried to do something very difficult and succeeded, then draw a picture of it. If you need ideas, ask a family member to name a challenge he/she has faced recently that worked out in the end.

Fantasy Self-portrait

This prompt’s all about encouraging girls to visualize themselves doing amazing things.

Challenge: Draw yourself on some kind of adventure. Most people would be too scared, or wouldn’t have the skills to take on an adventure like this, but you can do it. This might mean hiking through the rain forest, exploring Saturn’s rings, or something else entirely.
We hope you have fun with these!
