4 Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season

How to Give Back for the Holidays, During Covid

DECEMBER 4TH, 2020

The holidays are the perfect time to teach kids about resilience and giving back to the community. This year has been difficult for so many people, including children. However, it’s also an opportunity to show girls that they can lift their own spirits by opening their hearts to others. Giving back is a little trickier this year, thanks to Covid, but in many communities the need is greater than ever. Today we're sharing a few ideas for giving back as a family.

1) Create Your Own Fundraiser

Many companies and organizations, like Facebook and the Red Cross, make it easy to create your own holiday fundraiser. We love this idea because it allows girls to select a cause they truly care about, and think creatively.

The Red Cross has some fun ideas like creating your own ice skate-a-thon or polar plunge, but the platforms are so flexible you can do almost anything. Girls could make caroling videos for donors, have a cookie bake-a-thon, even do unexpected good deeds around the neighborhood—the sky’s the limit!

2) Sponsor A Family In Need

If your family is financially able to do so, it’s a great time to help folks that are struggling make their holiday wishes come true. If you’d like to sponsor a family, look for local charities that have programs to facilitate that. Oftentimes organizations will provide sponsors with a wish list, which makes it easy to get girls involved in shopping for others. You can also look for organizations like Toys for Tots that hold toy drives.

3) Volunteer At a Food Bank or Soup Kitchen

Many food banks and soup kitchens need help now more than ever. Volunteering in-person can be tricky in the age of Covid, but if you think this might be a fit for your family, don’t let that dissuade you from looking into it. Sometimes food banks need help sorting foods outside or in large warehouses, for example, so you may be able to find an in-person volunteer opportunity that you’re comfortable with. For more information, reach out to local food banks or soup kitchens directly, or look on Volunteer Match for a list of volunteer opportunities in your area.
We hope you’re able to find a way to give back that works for you.

The holidays are the perfect time to teach kids about resilience and giving back to the community. However, it’s also an opportunity to show girls that they can lift their own spirits by opening their hearts to others. Today, we're sharing a few ideas for giving back as a family.

Often, organizations provide sponsors with a wish list, making it easy to get girls involved in shopping for others. You can also look for organizations like Toys for Tots that hold toy drives.

3) Volunteer At a Food Bank or Soup Kitchen

Many food banks and soup kitchens need extra help during the holiday season. Volunteering is a great way for girls to see the impact of their efforts firsthand while giving back to their community. Families can sign up to sort donations, pack food boxes, or help serve meals. If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to local food banks or soup kitchens directly, or visit sites like Volunteer Match to find opportunities in your area.

4) Spread Kindness in Your Community

Not all acts of giving have to be big to make a big impact. Encourage girls to brainstorm small, meaningful ways to brighten someone’s day during the holidays. They could write thank-you notes to teachers, make handmade cards for nursing home residents, leave positive chalk messages on sidewalks, or surprise neighbors with a plate of cookies. These little acts of kindness help girls see that generosity isn’t just about money—it’s about thoughtfulness and connection. Plus, they’ll experience firsthand how good it feels to give joy to others.
We hope you’re able to find a way to give back that works for you.
