5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day: Empowering Girls to Lead the Way

5 New Year's Resolutions Perfect for the Whole Family

December 27th, 2022

Happy new year! We’re so excited for 2023 and all that it may bring. A new year means new opportunities, and we’ve been thinking about small things we can do to help girls be even more awesome. This year we’re making our new year’s resolutions a family affair with these easy ideas perfect for the whole family.

1. Try a New Sport

Fitness goals are often on top of the mind for new year’s resolutions. We love the idea of setting new active goals together as a family. From hiking and running to snowshoeing and skiing, there are many fun ways to be active as a family. We find that sports and being outside can be very empowering and are the perfect way to spend time together as a family. During the winter months, it can be challenging to find ways to be active outdoors. While there are plenty of snow sports like skiing and snowboarding, we love the simplicity of snowshoeing. It requires minimal gear and allows you to relax and explore, generally with less risk than skiing or snowboarding. Check out our outdoor adventure guide for more ideas.

2. Make a Family Bucket List

2023 is a new year filled with tons of opportunities to branch out and try new things. Make a family bucket list of fun goals to accomplish in the new year. This bucket list is filled with fun prompts to help organize your family’s hopes and wishes for the new year. Gather around the table and have fun coming up with all the new things you want to eat, play, visit, do, read, and more! Plus making goals as a family can encourage you to accomplish them- you can hold each other accountable to keep this resolution.

3. Have “Unplugged” Evenings

Shutting off your devices for an evening can lead to many benefits. Research shows that unplugging electronics at least an hour before bedtime can improve your sleep, circadian rhythm, and next morning's alertness. This new year’s resolution may be a challenge for the whole family, so start slow with one evening a week and set a goal to build upon as the year progresses.

4. Cook Together

If healthy eating is your goal, why not start cooking together? Healthier eating habits are easier to adopt if everyone is involved in the meal prep process. Kids love to cook and can often handle easy tasks like washing or cutting soft vegetables on their own (with an age-appropriate knife, of course).

The Food Network has compiled a list of fun and family friendly recipes to get you started. If you want to try this out but are pressed for time, consider purchasing meal kits and encouraging older kids to cook dinner a couple of nights a week. Meal kits generally include all of the ingredients you need and feature simple recipes that make them well-suited to older kids (with supervision as needed). Bon Appetite!

5. Start a Family Book Club

Creating healthy habits are typically what come to mind when making new year’s resolutions. Reading together is a resolution that has many benefits: it can increase vocabulary, boost imagination, and inspire a love for books. If you have young children start by reading picture books together, or maybe going to the library once a week to pick out new books together. As your kids get older, take turns picking a book that everyone reads then have a book club night to talk about your favorite characters, chapters, and themes. Here are a few of our favorite books featuring strong girls to get you started.

The new year is a great time to reevaluate your goals and set new ones for the year ahead. We hope we have inspired you to think of ways to include the whole family in the yearly tradition of creating new year’s resolutions. Happy New Year- here’s to a happy and healthy 2023.

5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day: Empowering Girls to Lead the Way

APRIL 22ND, 2026

Happy Earth Day! Earth Day is the perfect time to help the girls in your life connect with the environment and discover how they can make a positive impact on the planet.

Whether she’s a budding scientist or a creative soul, building a sustainable future starts with small, mindful steps at home. This year’s theme is "Our Power, Our Planet," which focuses on how our personal choices can spark big changes for the planet we love.

Here are 5 empowering ways to celebrate planet Earth together:

1. Take a "Green" Nature Walk

Spending time in nature isn't just fun—it’s fuel for a healthy mind. Research by the Texas Children in Nature Network shows that access to green spaces is linked to improved mental well-being, higher self-esteem, and lower stress levels in children.

  • Explore a new trail: Use a local map to find a park you’ve never visited.
  • Make it an adventure: Bring along a pair of gloves and a bag to pick up litter along the way. It’s a super cute way to leave the world better than you found it!

2. Dive Into "Upcycled" Art

Instead of buying new craft supplies, spark her imagination by reusing what you already have!

  • Create Upcycled Easter Egg Art: Don't toss those plastic eggs once the hunt is over! It is the perfect time to give them a second life. You can transform them into colorful "fireflies" with a battery-operated tea light or use fabric scraps to turn them into beautiful spring decorations.
  • Design a nature journal: Use scrap paper to create a book where she can sketch the plants and animals she sees outside.

3. Plant a "Pollinator" Garden

Gardening is a wonderful way to build resilience and patience. It teaches kids the reward of nurturing something from a tiny seed to a vibrant flower. According to the Children & Nature Network, school gardening programs have been shown to improve nutrition and support a healthy weight by getting kids excited about fresh produce.
  • Choose native plants: Research which flowers attract local bees and butterflies.
  • Try planting a "Pizza Garden": Plant basil, tomatoes, and oregano in a small pot. It’s the perfect time to learn about where our food comes from!

4. Practice "Nature Mindfulness"

Sometimes the best way to celebrate the Earth is to simply be still. It doesn’t take long to see the benefits; the American Psychological Association notes that just 40 seconds of looking at a green roof or a flowering garden can significantly improve a child's ability to focus and reduce mistakes on tasks.

  • Cloud watching: Lie on a blanket and describe the shapes you see.
  • Listen closely: Close your eyes and see if you can count five different sounds—like rustling leaves, distant water, or a chirping bird.

5. Join a Community Event

Empower her to be a leader by participating in a local project. For Earth Day 2026, Earth911 highlights that the global focus is on civic action and community organizing—reminding us that we have the power to protect our planet when we work together.

  • Attend a local event: Many libraries and community centers host free Earth Day events with hands-on learning activities.
  • Volunteer for a park clean-up: Check your local parks department's website for scheduled clean-up events. It's a great way to build social connections while making a positive impact.
  • Make a family pledge: Sit down together and write out one "planet-friendly" habit you'll start this month, like switching to reusable snack bags or starting a compost bin.

How are you planning to celebrate the planet and spark a little magic this year?
