Halloween Craft: Spooky Silhouette Art

As Halloween approaches, we're diving into a craft project that promises hours of spooky fun. Help your daughter unleash her inner artist by cutting out spooky shapes and using sponges to craft beautiful holiday prints. These silhouette prints are the perfect way to celebrate Halloween this year. Plus we love that this project introduces girls to self-expression with art techniques like masking, negative space, and creating silhouette shapes.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Construction paper
- Paint
- Sponge brushes or paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Pencil
How To Make Your Spooky Silhouette Art:
Step 1: Start by drawing your silhouette shapes. Use your pencil to draw a simple halloween shape on a piece of construction paper. We drew a bat, a ghost, and a jack-o-lantern. (Tip: If you need help drawing, you can always print out your images instead.)
Step 2: Cut the images out. If you drew a jack-o-lantern, be sure to cut out the face so it shows up on your painting!
Step 3: Choose your background paper and paint colors. We chose black paper, and white, yellow, and orange paint.
Step 4: Place the silhouettes on your paper and use your sponge brushes to paint around your image. If you don’t have sponge brushes, no problem! You can cut up a clean used sponge or you can use paint brushes.
Step 5: Remove your shape to reveal the silhouette and let dry.
Once the artwork is dry, hang it up in your home to celebrate the holiday. Using your daughter’s artwork as decor is a great way to build confidence in her artistic abilities!
