Raising Boys that Empower Girls—Book Review of The Heart of a Boy

Raising Boys that Empower Girls—Book Review of The Heart of a Boy

AUGUST 27TH, 2019

We first discovered Kate T. Parker’s work in early 2017 and fell in love! Her book Strong Is the New Pretty: A Celebration of Girls Being Themselves is a bestseller, and it’s easy to see why. The book features photos of real girls being strong, capable, wild, playful, and fierce. It makes a great coffee table book/conversation-starter and a fun alternative to the traditional bedtime story.

We love that book so much, we were tickled when we heard Kate was doing something similar, but for boys. People often ask us what they can do to raise boys that empower girls. We think a great place to start is by talking to boys about what it means to be a boy, a girl, a person—we’re multidimensional, and don’t have to conform to gender stereotypes.

Kate’s new book, The Heart of a Boy: Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Boyhood, is a wonderful way to inspire these conversations with boys. The book does an incredible job of depicting the depth of boys—their energy, creativity, warmth, fortitude, smiles, and more.

The Heart of a Boy features over 150 photos of boys being their amazing selves, with quotes from each boy. This includes photos of boys hugging family members, making music, playing sports, going on outdoor adventures, hanging out with girls, and cuddling pets.

Both Strong Is the New Pretty and The Heart of a Boy make initiating important conversations with your little ones a bit easier. We recommend picking up a copy, snuggling up and going through the book slowly, reading and talking about the pictures. Talk about what the kids are doing in the photos, what they must be feeling in that moment, what your child thinks about that, and what you think about it. There are so many photos in the books, so you can come back to them over and over again.

Happy reading!
