The Ultimate Summer Reading List For Girls

JUNE 4th, 2024

Summer is nearly here; it's time to pack away schoolbooks and delve into fiction.
Whether you're embarking on an extended vacation, scheduling camps, or embracing a more relaxed summer, our reading list will keep young minds active.
From the vibrant world of crayon-breaking Willow to the high-spirited adventures of the Princess in Black and the inspiring journey of kid-trepreneur, Mia Madison, CEO, these books will not only capture girls’ hearts and minds but also empower them, igniting their imagination and curiosity.
Affectionately written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the best-selling author, this beautifully illustrated book tells a gentle story of little Chino's love of her hardworking mom.

When Chino's mother goes to work every day, her scarf stays behind (she wears it over her hair at night), and Chino takes her stuffed bunny on countless adventures with the sleeping scarf while waiting for her mom to come home.

If you're searching for a cozy bedtime read, look no further.

Age: 3-7

Imaginative and free-thinking, Willow is the opposite of her strict art teacher, Miss Hawthorn. She runs her classroom like a military zone and demands kids color between the lines. Willow breaks crayons and gives her creative spirit free reign when she draws. So, how will the two get on?

Dubbed the 'Horrid Little Girl' by Miss Hawtorn, Willow tries to convince her teacher to embrace creativity, but will she succeed?
At first glance, this is a colorful book about art, but on reflection, girls will realize Willow teaches Ms Hawtorn a vital life lesson.

Beautifully written by Denise Brennan-Nelson and Rosemarie Brennan, this ode to art is a must-buy if you're looking to supercharge critical thinking ability.

Age rating 6-9 (excellent for beginning readers).

Mia Madison is a kid-trepreneur. After setting up two kid businesses, a pet-sitting one and a seasonal lemonade stand, she decides to help her friends create new ventures, and voila, she's founded a third business. But can she juggle them with her friends, family, and schoolwork?

Mia’s story is designed to inspire girls to start ventures. Reading this book will capture girls’ imaginations and set them on a creative path. It is packed with cute illustrations, fun doodles, and lovable, diverse characters, and it belongs on any resourceful girl's bookshelf.

The best thing? The second in the series, the Pop-Up Shop Predicament, will be out soon.

Age: 8-11

5. One Crazy Summer

This moving book about sisterhood, a 2011 Newbery Honor Winner, will bring history alive. Set in Oakland, California, in 1968, it tells of three sisters traveling to California to meet their mom, who left them when her eldest daughter, Delphine, was just four. Delphine is a loving and caring sister, a mother figure to her two younger sisters.

The girls anticipate a trip full of joy and lightness, hoping to meet Tinkerbell and visit Disneyland. However, once there, they realize their expectations don't match reality. Instead, their mother, Cecile, sends them to a day camp run by the Black Panthers.

Sensitively written by award-winning author Rita Williams-Garcia, this book with a heart shines a light on one of the underrepresented parts of American history. It's a beautiful read for curious girls who love reading stories populated with well-thought-out characters.

Age: 9-11

Middle school can be a struggle for many, including dreamer Izzy and her best friend, straight-A student Bri. Izzy loves making up stories and acting in skits, but to her family's dismay, she needs help focusing on schoolwork. Bri aces all her tests but wants to be known for more than just her brain and is tired of her mom encouraging her to do drama.

The graphic novel is entertaining, surprisingly deep, and has an original plot with a twist you may not see coming.

Cleverly written and illustrated, this novel is insightful for any girl going through Middle School angst. From the award-winning author of the Invincible Emmie series, Terri Libenson, this novel will encourage reluctant readers to cut down on screen time and give reading a go.

Age: 9-12

If the girl in your life enjoyed Anne of Green Gables, she will love this multilayered novel, set in 1936 amid the Great Depression. Abilene Tucker has been put on a train by her father to (fictional) Manifest, Kansas, a 'dried up' town depleted of joy, and Abeline is not impressed. That is until she discovers a hidden cigar box full of letters from a spy called the Rattler and embarks on a thrilling adventure to uncover secrets from the past. Will Abeline discover what role her father played?

Clare Vanderpool weaves a story rich in historical detail involving murders, orphans, bootlegging, and a mother in hiding. Winner of the 2011 Newbery Award, the author has created believable characters, a rich insight into family and community, and a hopeful ending.

At over 380 pages, this is one of those gripping novels that will seep into girls’ brains.

Age: 10-12

Finding engaging books to while away the long summer hours can be tricky, but you can't go wrong with this diverse list.

Smashing stereotypes wherever she goes, this princess with a twist has awesome adventures while fighting monsters to save the kingdom. The Princess in Black is Princess Magnolia's alter ego, and when monsters need to be slayed, she ditches her pink flouncy gown and dons her mask and ninja-like outfit.

Can she save herself? Girls will be enthralled from the first page and captivated by the cartoony illustrations, which add humor to the story. Produced by the award-winning writing team of Shannon and Dean Hale and illustrator Leuyen Pham, the Princess in Black can be easily read by newly independent readers or used for bedtime reading.

This fun series, featuring a strong female protagonist, promotes the idea that princesses can be more than delicate.

Age rating: 5-8
