Pressed Flower and Plant Lanterns
JUNE 25th, 2024
Summer is here, and that usually means more time outside! These Pressed Flower & Plant Lanterns are a great activity to preserve treasures from a nature walk. Grab your family, lace up your hiking shoes, collect some flowers and plants, and turn them into a beautiful lantern that can be displayed all season long. Please note this project requires some planning and a little time to complete and is a great opportunity for girls to experience/manage a multi-step project!
Here’s what you’ll need:
• Mod podge
• Flowers and plants
• Heavy book
• Paper towel
• Glass Jar (any size)
• Paintbrush
• Twine
• Tealight

How to make your Lantern:
Step 1: Go on a nature walk or hike. On your journey, collect flowers and plants that you enjoy.
Step 2: Once you are home, place your plants on a paper towel and place inside a heavy book. Allow the flowers and plants to press for about a week.
Step 3: Paint a small section of the jar at a time with Mod Podge. Mod Podge can dry pretty quickly so work in small areas at a time. Place the flowers or plants on the painted area.
Step 4: Cover the flower or plant with more Mod Podge. Repeat this step until the jar is covered all the way around.
Step 5: Once the jar is dry, paint again with Mod Podge to ensure the flowers are secure.
Step 6: As soon as the jar is dry you can add some finishing touches. Wrap some twine around the mouth of the jar and then tie a bow around the front of it.
Step 7: Add a tealight to the inside of the jar. For a kid-friendly option, opt for a battery-powered tea light.
This project is a great opportunity for girls to tap into their inner botanist and learn about different kinds of plants as they hike. These lanterns also make a great gift for loved ones!
