The Ultimate Guide to Summer Adventures for Girls

The Ultimate Guide to Summer Adventures for Girls

JUNE 26TH, 2019

At Hopscotch Girls HQ, we are SO excited for a bit of warm weather and a break from school! Summer means shorts, sun and some much-needed time outside. It’s our favorite time of the year to go adventuring, and to introduce kids to the wild and wonderful outdoors.

If you need a little outdoor adventure inspiration, or are wondering how to get started, check out our free e-book, Strong Girls: A Parent’s Guide to Building Confidence and Bravery with Outdoor Adventures for tips on trying 20 different sports.

Outdoor adventures are great because they provide a natural opportunity for adults to model confidence and bravery for kids, and for kids to experience it themselves. Here are a few of our favorite low-cost adventures:

Hiking is fantastic because it’s free, and all you need to get started is a pair of sneakers. It’s also very easy to tailor to your child’s level of experience. If she’s mostly an indoor kid, a one-hour hike might feel like a challenge. If she’s more outdoorsy, she might be up for something more difficult, like a full-day adventure. We also love how conversation seems to flow naturally when you’re outside together for hours at time. It’s an opportunity to connect on a deeper level with your kids. >>Learn more.

Camping is wonderful because it requires a long period of time with family, away from devices and indoor activities. Like hiking, the conversation flows naturally, and nature can be an incredible playground. It's fun, affordable and you can always borrow camping gear from a friend. >>Learn more.

Backpacking can be intimidating, but it can also be magical! Backpacking trips with family are like hiking & camping on steroids. They’re an opportunity for deep family bonding. Plus, there tend to be lots of opportunities for kids to challenge themselves, try new things, and overcome obstacles (hiking with a heavy pack, gathering firewood, helping prepare dinner, etc.). >>Learn more.

When the temperature soars, cooling off with a swim is the best! Swimming is great because there are usually lots of opportunities to swim nearby (local pools, etc.), but our favorite is swimming in lakes and calm rivers. Just be sure to stay safe. >>Learn more.

For more information on these adventures, and 16 other outdoor sports (kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, snorkeling, stand-up paddling, surfing and more), check out our free e-book Strong Girls: A Parent’s Guide to Building Confidence and Bravery with Outdoor Adventures.
