4 Fun Ideas for Celebrating Halloween During COVID-19

4 Fun Ideas for Celebrating Halloween During COVID-19

SEPTEMBER 21ST, 2020

Hopscotch Girls is all about empowering girls. Part of that is acknowledging how girls are feeling and helping families and caregivers lift girls up when they need it. With many schools and businesses closed, daily life is very different from life a year ago. Even though Halloween's still five weeks away, some children and families are already starting to plan for the holiday and worry about being able to celebrate.

We’re big believers in bringing as much joy to our lives as we can, so today we’re sharing four ideas for celebrating Halloween in the era of COVID-19.

1) Distanced Costume Parade

Some families may not be able to trick-or-treat as they normally would, but that doesn’t mean we have to skip the whole night. One idea is to organize a socially distanced costume parade in your neighborhood. Just pick a time and starting point, and make sure your neighbors know the plan. Kids can show off their costumes and neighbors can participate in the cheer from their doorsteps.

2) Low or No-Contact Trick-or-Treating

The National Confectioner’s Association has some fun ideas for no-contact trick-or-treating. One is to hang candies from a tree so each trick-or-treater can grab one. Fun365 also has some fun ideas like creating a candy graveyard and handing out candy with a mask and tongs.

3) Candy Scavenger Hunt

If you’re staying in on Halloween night but don’t want to disappoint your children by skipping the candy altogether, consider doing a scavenger hunt. An easy to set-up option is to hide candy around your yard or house for an Easter-style candy hunt. For older kids, consider hiding the candy in some tricky spots and writing up clues to lead them to it.

4) Home Halloween Party

There’s no one-way to celebrate a holiday. Think about the things your family enjoys doing and consider throwing an at-home Halloween party with members of your household. Snuggle up with a Halloween movie (yes, they exist—check Netflix), or make some spooky treats together (check Pinterest for loads of ideas) and put Monster Mash on repeat.
We hope these ideas make planning a fun and safe Halloween a little easier.
